Porsche x Pantone is revering an iconic Porsche color, Turbonite Gray

Porsche, like all automakers, has leaned into the trend of grayscale color palettes in the design process. Fewer reds, yellows, and oranges remain in the industry. In their place, the increasing popularity of grayscale means more white, black, and gray in showrooms. However, Porsche recently collaborated with Pantone to innovate with “Turbonite,” a unique shade of metallic gray.

The Pantone Color Institute, the entity behind the Pantone Fashion Color Trend Report, is an authority on the impact of color in fashion and design. As such, the Porsche x Pantone collaboration resulted in an auto industry first, namely a car color featured in the Fashion Color Trend Report.

Vice President Style van Porsche Michael Mauer proudly explained the significance of Turbonite. “We are proud to be the first outside brand represented in Pantone’s Fashion Color Trend Report. Turbonite is unique. An innovative, timeless, strong, but not loud color that gives our Turbo derivatives an unmistakable, self-assured look.”

The look arrives just in time for the 2024 New York Fashion Week (September 6-11). Porsche says a 911 Turbo S and a Taycan Turbo S will make an appearance at the Porsche x Pantone NYFW event to show off the new shade.

Pantone asserts that the Porsche color is more than just a shade of gray

Pantone’s vice president, Laurie Pressman, is adamant that the new color is far from another shade of gray. “It’s not just gray,” Pressman said in The Story of Turbonite. “There is this tawny bronze undertone that comes through. This is a shade that is inspired by the natural elements. It’s a mineral-inspired shade”

Pressman went on to applaud Porsche for its grasp of the importance of color in design work. “To work with a company who understands the science and emotion of color as part of the design process was truly a gift.”

In addition to being another Porsche color option, the hue is exclusively “a signature color for Turbo.” Unfortunately, that means fans of the Porsche car color likely won’t see the option for non-Turbo models.
