I made the switch to an M5 about a month ago. Bunch of people from the GT2/Turbo section of the board that I've kept in touch with have been asking for pictures. I know it's a little late, but here are the delivery pictures of the M5.
No mods yet, just a custom cut clearbra on the front bumper by Premier Auto. Highly recommended. They came by my house by appointment, and within about 2 hours the install was complete. The quality of the film was excellent and i personally cannot see ANY signs of the film being on the car without peeking behind the fender, or open the hood, or get underneath the car. The custom install is well worth the 100 bucks extra and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Without further adiu, here are the pictures:
Overall, the M5 is faster than the 996 stock for stock and with unparallel creature comfort. I'm still trying to adjust to the size of the car having came from such a tiny car but I think BMW really did a good job of making the car "feel small" when you're tossing it around turns and evading traffic. I definitely love the electronic dampening adjustment as this is my only car(commuter), but i definitely don't think the M5 is comparible to a well tuned Turbo.
Very happy with the purchase, going from an 01 to an newer car is a HUGE difference to me. The fit and finish just feels a lot better with zero squeeks or rattle that I was experiencing in the Turbo. Bluetooth, integrated garage opener and a real navigation is definitely something that should've came from a 120k Turbo. No complaints, would definitely do it again. Maybe an Exige S to go with the M5 in a few years.

I am leaning the other way. From an M5 to a 996. Or 997 maybe. I think a new M5 is nice, but I want something smaller and better on gas. I did drive one on the track at the BMW Performance Center, and it is a blast. Just try the M button and you will be smiling from ear to ear.
Did you get the SMG or the manual? Heads up display? The factory cars have both the SMG and the heads up. Pretty cool. It is a hot rod, that is for sure. But it is more car than I want right now.

lol.. you're right, I do a lot of highway commute.
I got the M5 because I didn't want to keep an 01 996 Turbo through graduate school when I decided to go back to law school. Problem was, there was nothing newer and equally as "good" as the 996 turbo. So I kinda screwed myself lol. Now I got a huge itch to get back into a smaller car... just nothing good i scoming to mind w/o spending a ridiculous amount of $
