Driving the Gumpert

Driving the Gumpert
I missed the ERTC showing but had a great time on Sunday down at ORP with Todd, Matt and the crew taking out the Gumpert. It was a good thing we had lots of street gas available
the car is fantastic and reminds me of the saying "be careful what you wish for, you might actually get it."
i know there must be some pics out there of the car in action, so post away folks!

I was fortunate to get about 30 min in the counter-clockwise direction and 15 in the clockwise direction at ORP.
My driving impressions:
My driving impressions:
- The turbos take a second to spool, but when they do the car is blisteringly fast. I played with timing of the throttle, getting on the gas just before the apexes so that the car would be blasting down the straights immediately....and when it does, it goes so quickly you are immediately thinking about where the brake pedal is and making sure you downshift at the right time so that the rear wheels don't spin you.
- This combination of light weight, massive power and downforce is incredible for track use. The MSPCs were good, but on Hoosiers I have to believe this car would break track records at most tracks. ORP is not the best playground for this car given it's strength in having longer straights, but it was still very fast...everywhere. Even at 5 or 6/10ths.
- It can be an intimidating car. It's a handful under throttle, and around turns the steering is very responsive but there are 600,000 reasons not to push it too hard. The mid engine layout is great. The car catches itself well when there is traction loss around turns, if you're paying attention.
- The sequential shifting is cool to use, but you have to muscle it to make sure it works. Otherwise it puts you into neutral and you're panicking a little to get it back in gear.
- This is an amazing car for the track and would be an awesome car for showing off...but it's not a comfortable car for daily driving. It would be a challenge to drive it in traffic, or when there are a lot of traffic lights, IMO.

maybe i'm watching too much top gear. it works for the stig nearly every time.

And of course, we didn't have turn workers and Roland was coming down the straight at full speed. We were on the paddock waiting for a big mushroom cloud.

I guess if a crash did happen, each driver would be on the hook for their respctive car thy were driving!
Sorry I missed it too, hopefully there is another chance in the future.

Yes, you break it, you buy it. Good thing Brendo is one of those rich folk from the eastside. Todd and Matt said they loved it and want to come back next year. Maybe something more public. This was a spontaneous shakedown. It is convenient that they were heading south on this trip, and I was able to open the track for them.

Agreed. The car was a hoot to drive, but why am I not surprised that Brendo looped it? Where's that PDK and traction control when you need it. Wait, didn't the car have traction control turned on?
The pedals were awkwardly placed but I'm sure one could fiddle with that enough to be happy. The shifter was one place the car could be improved, but honestly, its pretty damned amazing. I've only been in one car that fast before and I wasn't driving.
The steering is amazingly light. Right when you think the car should begin to push out as you add throttle, you realize it isn't pushing. The front end sticks, and sticks well.
All I have to say is thank you for the change to drive the car. It made my weekend!
See you guys in October!
