What do you guys think about the 997 TT turning into a luxury car? It's kind of disappointing to see its performance fall under many competitors, including 4-door luxury sedans. Even the 4-door Mercedes E63 and BMW M5 have a faster 60 to 130. The other Mercedes coupes (e.g., CLK63 AMG Black Series) may even perform better on the track.

BTW, I've owned Porsche turbos since the early 80s and still do today. I'm just disappointed that it's not far and beyond all other cars, like it was during the late 70s, 80s and early 90s. I suppose the CGT, and to some extent, the GT3, are now the modern day "turbos".

After finally getting a chance to drive one hard...I would say its the ultimate GT car...but its definitely not as sporty as even a 996 and not nearly as sporty as the 993/964/930 variant...

I think Porsche has gone more focused than ever, creating different cars for different purposes. It's hard to find a car for the road that can match the 997TT from A to B, while the GT3 and CGT are perfect for the track.

We all have a different definitions of what a luxury car is; for me a BMW and MB come to mind but the 997TT, regardless of its relative comfort, is still a street sports car, far too rough and noisy to qualify (and not having enough luxury features and gadgets) as a luxury car.

The Carrera GT is a GT, at least according to Porsche. The "GT" definition is a little fuzzy for me. Is an AMG Mercedes a GT? If not, why not?

60 to 130 for the 4-door E63 AMG is 11.9. I pretty much measured the same on my own car (see below). The latest tests of the 997 TT have gotten slower times than the first tests in Europe. When I drove a 997 TT in the US, it felt like a 60 to 130 of around 12 seconds (C&D's latest test also got around 12 seconds), so I'm not sure what the real time is.

actually, the time you posted of the amg is barely faster than a 996TT 60-130 which is 12.2 second. a 997TT is def faster than 11.8 60-130

and the carrera GT is a full on race car for the street. gt stands for grand touring which is what the 996TT and 997TT are. they are basically fast cars that are luxurious.

no way a 997tt does 60-130 in 12 seconds. I would bet it's under 10 and closer to 9.5.

exactly, a ferrari f430 does it in 9.5 and the 997TT is just as fast if not faster.

The 997 Turbo is faster than the E63 and M5 in every way possible. Period.

60-130 times are way too hard to measure comparatively and accurately, in fact probably the hardest, unless you are at an airstrip one the same day doing the roll ons like Gustav does on M5/M6 board.com.

The Turbo is a luxury car, but more hard core than BMW and Mercedes. Times have changed, if the turbo was far ahead of all cars, what use would there be for a GT3 and a GT2??? The 300 hp that would dominate in uears past is weak now, you have to be VERY fast to win and no car is THAT overly dominant any more with the Z06 being the closest, for now, dont forget the GT2, 08' Viper, RB (V10), GTR, Blue Devil all coming out in a the hext couple of years so top dog honors are hard earned and short lived.

And if I may ask, how exactly does a butt dyno tell the difference between 12.0 and 11.8 seconds??? Do you really wish your E63 was faster than the Turbo, because it's not. Or is this just a plug for the E63, Im confused???

My butt dyno says it's a 12 second 60-130 and not 9 seconds. Car & Driver July 2007 has it at 12.4, which is what it felt like to me when I drove it. Some earlier tests in Europe imply that it's faster, but I can find any 60-130 tests in the US. Have you seen any 60-130s? I'd just like to know what the 60-130 really is, just for the record.

Hopefully it's in the 9s, or something's way wrong. That's my point.

I always hear that the TT is now not a sports car. What are you guys smoking? A tarted up sedan does not a sports car make. The TT is a 997 and its a sports car. Its low, cramped, enclosed, sleek, fast... so what if it has nav and airconditioning? Its the 21st century.

Even the lighter CLK63 Black edition is a mid 12 second car trapping in the low teens. The 997TT is a high 11 second car trapping in the high teens to 120mph range. Subtracting a 4 second 0-60 (most are in the 3's) means than the TT would need 4 seconds to go from 120-130mph to be a 12 second 60-130 car. Your butt dyno is way off. Now if you are talking about a rolling 60-130 run, the turbo will take more time to spool depending on the gears used but it is still not going to take 12 seconds.

Ditto, I have not yet seen a 60-130 for the TT but I bet it's not 3 seconds slower than a Z06 which I'm sure is faster than the 9 seconds it was timed at. The Z06 is faster but not that much.

The AMGs always have an advantage in top gear testing as it will just kick down on the auto.
