Whining Sound

Whining Sound
There is a filler cap to the left of the engine oil filler cap. The cap is labeled "only hydraulicoil, pentosin CHF11s". This unit sometimes makes a high pitched whining sound which seems to go away when you depress the clutch? Is this the power steering pump? How is it related to the clutch?
Additionally, the clutch pedal seems stiffer than usual when the engine is off, and gets normal once the engine is turned on. I've heard of hydraulic clutches, but not hydraulic power assist.
Markski has a picture that shows the small black filler cap here
The oil seems to be low....
A search on yahoo says this: Pentosin CHF 11S is a semi-synthetic power steering/level control fluid used in a broad range of European cars. It is unique in providing precise performance in a wide range of temperatures -40C to 150C (-40ºF to 302ºF).

Sounds like the pressure release valve on your power steering pump is faulty. The TSB is 4897. If this is the case you will have the replace the whole power steering fluid pump/resevoir. The noise should be especially bad around 3000 rpm.

IF the fluid is low maybe it just needs a refill.

Thanks all, I'll check the fluid. I have an easycare plan good till 2011, so it will cost $100 deductible max.
While I'm at it I'm going to ask Speed Gallery to replace my coolant reservoir and maybe get some boost hoses.

OK, I added a BIT of fluid and now it's perfectly flush with the "hot" mark on the dipstick with the car hot. Still makes noise though....
Can I run the engine with the cap off?
Is there burping necesary? Or is it time to summon the warranty company?
