My New Exhaust

Over the last year, I have used three exhausts on my car(stock, Ruf, Evo)

The Ruf had excellent power but over time became pretty loud. It was pretty hard to make a business cell call in it. Clients would ask me if I was in a convertible or a pickup truck. I ended up selling it and was going get a 9FF but changed my mind when 9FF began having problems. The other problem was that it cost over $6,000.00 with no guarantee of performance.

I then switched over to a EVO stock based system. It was much quieter but I felt a loss of performance. I sent my car to Stephen at Imagine Auto to have some work done and after he dynoed my car, he came to the conclusion that with the hybrid turbos and Stage 4GT+ tuning is was losing power because of the muffler. He installed Fabspeed cats and straight pipes and it made a incredible difference. The only problem was that I could never use those on my car. He and I discussed it and came up with the muffler below. It is a slightly modified stock muffler with 100 cell cats. The real neat part is that it has valves just past the cats that are opened electronically via a interior button and the exhaust because straight pipes. Stephen will probably give you guys better information on this exhaust. My car will be finished and dynoed next week and I will be happy to share with everyone.

I think this is a great solution to anyone who wants a aggressive sounding exhaust but does not want to listen to it on a 300 mile trip.

Happy Thanksgiving

PS: Chad I have a kitty in my picture too!!!

Sounds like a great concept. I'm very interested too Stephen.

So far I've tried the B&B (no power), modified stock (lacks power), Fabspeed loud (way too loud), and Fabspeed so-called quiet (still too loud at 2-2.6K rpm).

This sounds like a good solution if it dynos well.

Thumbs up Ruf Quiet Version

996TTR
Another option is Ruf's quiet version which has a single pipe per side and is very close to stock in noise level but has the same perfrormance gains. Another poster on this board has it (JohnD) and switched for the same reason as you.

I had the same muffler that you are talking about but it was made by EVO. I know that it is identical because we stuck a fiberoptic scope up the pipe of the Ruf and the EVO. That muffler on a car like mine with 650+ horsepower really kills power. I believe it was about a 40 horsepower difference between the EVO and the 100 cell straight pipe setup.

My four pipe RUF muffler was pretty quiet until I put about 5,000 miles on if. That is when it got noisy. RUF has also told me that the muffler is good up to 600 to 625. This muffler is very similar to the RUF you have. It has the 100 cell cats but has the ability to open those large valves. With the valves closed it is pretty close to stock. I will let you know the difference in horsepower between open and closed settings.

Stephen/996TTR -

Is there a way to make the system essentially automated to actuate the valve at a predetermined RPM, level of exhaust flow, level of backpressure, or something like that?

Basically I'm looking for an exhaust system where volume can be controlled by throttle. I don't mind it being loud when I get on it. But, it's quite annoying when the system is loud at cruising or at a very low RPM.
