1,200-Horsepower McLaren Has Three Turbos And P1-Style Active Aero
If you want to make your old MP4-12C faster and scarier than a P1, just add a turbo.
The whistle of the turbos, count them 1-2-3, behind the driver’s head is one of the most manic and incredible things we’ve ever heard from a car. Add in the fact that this McLaren “Triboost” features 1,200 horsepower of pants-wetting potential, and you’re dealing with a hypercar-killer built on merely supercar bones. Instead of the traditional 12C convertible bodywork, this car features a functional P1 front lid, P1 GTR active rear aero, plus a scad of other bodywork tack-on bits to make the car look much meaner than its original face ever could have. This mind-melting car will run a quarter mile time somewhere deep in the 8s, which for those of you who don’t know, is absolutely mental.
With four-figure power levels kicking around behind your seat, this HyperCar Development car is among the fastest cars in the world. In fact, this car as is, currently has an electronic limitation of just 270 miles per hour, due in large part to the limits of the Michelin tires at each of the four corners. That kind of performance isn’t even available from McLaren’s showroom. Not only that, a brand new 720S will set you back a cool $285,000, while you can buy a used MP4-12C for right around the one-forty range, less if you shop it a bit. After the extra one-forty for all of the #Triboost modifications, you’ll have P1 level performance (or better) with $5000 left over to pay for a few track days and a few hundred gallons of fuel. It’s hard to call anything a ‘bargain’ when it’ll cost nearly three-hundred grand, but this definitely is.
This car looks, sounds, and goes like the absolute business, and costs far less than you’d expect. When you can embarrass Hypercar owners for a fraction of the cost, why even bother with the hybrid shenanigans. Just add a third turbo and head to the race track. Or hold out for the 1500 horsepower version.
