Supercharged 964 Carrera 4 is the Ultimate Safari Build
Built to tackle any terrain, this classic 911 is our favorite Safari build ever.
The classic air-cooled Porsche 911 is a great many things to a great many people, and it seems to excel at any task it’s asked to perform. Lately, Safari-style builds have become increasingly popular, taking 911s across snow, ice, dirt, rocks, sand, and anything else their brave owners would like to traverse quickly, and stylishly.
This 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 coupe on BringATrailer is possibly the most extreme off-road 911 we’ve ever seen, short of factory rally racing efforts. This all-wheel drive 964 was comprehensively overhauled and upgraded to create a supremely capable, bulletproof, and agile machine. One that’s just as much at home crushing rocks as it is crushing speed limits.
The build was completed by Kelly-Moss Racing out of Madison, Wisconsin. Starting with a low-mileage West Coast car, they added wide fender flares and modified the front trunk for ground clearance before adding tubular bumpers and a carbon fiber light pod. Adjustable long-travel coil-overs handle damping duties, while BFGoodrich all terrain tires on Braid wheels put the power to the ground.
There’s plenty of power on tap, too. The 3.8-liter flat-six is forcefed by a Eaton supercharger. From there it is fitted with a full complement of intake, exhaust, cooling, and fuel upgrades to handle the boost. While the stock brakes are a definite strong suit of early 911s, this car has been upgraded with Brembo calipers and Stoptech pads and rotors to offset the demands of the beefed-up engine and larger rolling stock.

One feature we really like are the LED work lights inside the wheel wells. This is nice touch making nighttime repairs a bit easier when you’re on a rally stage and every second counts.
Inside, the interior has a luxurious but minimalist feel, with RS-style door panels, radio delete, a roll bar, and Recaro racing buckets. The blue plaid interior offsets the white exterior nicely — it’s a classic color combination that’s fallen out of favor and is due to be back in style.
With over $300,000 in receipts and an award from SEMA 2017 to show for it, this 964 may be the ultimate off-road 911. With that said, it’s likely a bargain even at it’s $200,964 final sale price.
