911 Hybrid Not Coming…Yet
Electrification is coming folks, but it might not be coming to everything just yet, at least at Porsche that is. According to Porsche’s hybrid guru Manfred Schurmann, while the company did just stick the same hybrid drive train from the Panamera into the Cayenne, that same approach probably won’t be throughout the rest of Porsche’s lineup.
Schurmann absolutely dismissed the idea of putting it into the 911 and the new Macan, at least for right now. Speaking with TopGear, the executive stated that for the moment, both cars packaging wouldn’t allow for a hybrid setup. However, he was coy as to whether or not they could show up in those cars in the future.
Recent rumors have been swirling around the next generation of the 911 as to whether or not the entire range would be receiving some form of turbo-charging or electrification.
Many believed that the company would favor going the hybrid route especially after the success of the 918 Spyder, but this outright dismissal from the head of Porsche’s hybrid department might mean that hybridizing the range is much further down the road.
In an age where electrifications and hybrids are no longer dirty terms, will it be that much longer until the most iconic sports car in history receives the same treatment?
Will it change the perception of the car, or even the company? We all once thought it was ridiculous that Porsche was bringing out a SUV, but it has only been through the unprecedented sales that the company has remained so profitable. Will a hybrid 911 be a deal breaker?
