Acura’s Mission: Research and Destroy?
When an auto manufacturer is going through the process of building a car, it’s common practice for them to actually purchase one or multiple competitor vehicles for comparison. It’s not industrial espionage, it’s simple market research.
We’ve heard stories of Porsche finding out a particular GT3 RS was owned by Acura for NSX development, so they left a little love-note for them hidden inside the car, which means these kind of practices are quite common, and even hilarious.
That being said, there are rumors floating around that Acura actually destroyed a Ferrari 458 during their research of the Italian prancing horse. It’s said that after all driving and benchmark tests were completed on the Ferrari, NSX engineers started disassembling the vehicle to inspect build quality and other factors important to them. Again, not shocking at all. What is shocking, is that they reportedly threw the Ferrari parts in the dumpster once they were finished!
I’ve personally experience the new Acura NSX at speed, and it surely is a technological and automotive masterpiece, but I’m simply gutted at the thought of a parted out Ferrari 458 sitting somewhere in a landfill. Then again, that’s the cost of doing business, huh?
