restomod

We normally think of cars from the muscle car era as restomod cars, but newer ones have us feeling our age.

If Monterey Car Week taught us anything, it’s that a new wave of cars are now old. We don’t normally think of cars from the 90’s and 00’s as old, but… they are. And with each example here being at least 28 years old, it would be like a 1968 car being given the restomod treatment in 1996.

Yikes.

Tuthill GT1

Tuthill’s GT One is a reimagining of the legendary Porsche GT1. The Porsche racer debuted in 1996, a common year in this article, apparently. Meant to extract all of the emotions of the GT1 in a package modernized for todays drivers. Tuthill’s creation is not only a work of art, but also more rare than Porsche’s road going GT1 model, according to Road & Track.

Restomod is a misnomer. This is more of a mod than a restoration, as there’s almost nothing left of the original car. We actually can’t really tell which generation of 911 serves as the base by which they build off of.

Touring Veloce 12

Production of the 550 Maranello began in – you guessed it – 1996. Though it did run through 2002. And now in 2024, Touring has decided they wanted a shot at this restomod business. Having been the designer and body builder for OEMs, Touring knows a thing or two about exteriors and interiors.

Called the Veloce 12, this is more like a renovation of a Ferrari 550 Maranello, with interior laid out exactly as Ferrari made it according to Car and Driver. However all new materials and surfaces await thirty lucky owners.

Nardone 928

Porsche’s production of the 928 ended in… 1995. But it began in 1978. Bookending the 1980’s, its no wonder that when Nardone Automotive did a restomod to their 928, that it touched on all things nostalgic for that electronic era.

Via Top Gear, we see the body gets flares that kind of soil the lines a little bit, but its the interior that has swooned us with a great deal of effectiveness. The center console looks like a Revox stereo face, with the most simple and elegant dash board we’ve seen in a very long time.

What’s next?

Modern – ahem “modern” – restomod cars are actually quite a good thing if you think about it. Modern convenience features are such a huge improvement over the past decade or so, and power is never at a shortage with new tuning opportunities abound. So we welcome this new trend. Even if it makes our knees ache and gives us a dizzy spell if we stand up too fast.
