Cayenne and Panamera Turbo Faces Recall
Porsche has just issued a very un-Porsche like recall on the Cayenne Turbo, the Panamera Turbo, and the Panamera Turbo S. According to Porsche, they’ve caught a casting defect in the turbines that might lead to a blown turbo and fire.
All Cayenne Turbos from 2012 and Panamera Turbos from 2011 forward are affected. Granted, that’s only 270 or so models, but the consequences of a blown turbo are pretty dire.
If you’re lucky, the turbine wheels might just fracture. That’ll result in a sharp decrease in power and an expensive mechanic’s bill, but won’t kill your car. However, should the turbine shaft fracture, there’s a chance the turbo will dump oil into the exhaust. That’ll show up as a lack of power, accompanied by smoke and maybe even fire. For people running extra boost through their turbos, this should set of warning lights. More pressure means they’ll be more likely to break.
Affected turbo Porsche owners can take their cars to the nearest dealership to get their turbines replaced for free. Or, they can continue to drive around praying their Porsche doesn’t pull a Ferrari.
