2019 Dodge Challenger RT Scat Pack 1320 First Drive Review
The King of Bracket Racers
With the transbrake, the Scat Pack 1320 launches off the line hard. Get it just right, and the car will just barely spin the rear tires and fly down the strip, like a speeding bullet. The ZF 8-speed automatic does a fabulous job of offering quick gear changes and keeping the Scat Pack in the power band. It does so, lap after lap after lap, too. Despite having to lift off at the 1/8th mile mark, the Scat Pack 1320 and I easily coasted to consistent mid-12 second passes, all day. The biggest variation I saw all day was from 12.7 to 12.5. It’s extremely consistent, offering easily repeatable quick passes down the drag strip, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, very easy to drive, as a result.
The last run of the day was my fastest, with the Scat Pack 1320 doing 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, the 1/8th mile in 7.8 seconds and coasting our way to a 12.5 1/4-mile time. This is all easily accessible via the “Performance Pages” function, which can display these performance metrics on both the central infotainment screen and inside the driver’s gauge cluster.
Considering that Dodge claims the Scat Pack 1320 will do 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, and the full 1/4-mile in 11.7 seconds, it would seem that they have succeeded in making this car easily approachable and consistent. It’s the true weekend warrior car, one that can drive you to work on Monday, go out for date night on Friday, and tear up the drag strip on Sunday, all for less than $45,000.
