Eric Clapton's Berlinetta 512 Revisited

Ferrari likes to play favorites. Not just anyone can test drive their cars and not just anyone can buy them. Not because they’re too expensive, but because sometime Ferrari just says “no”. But, if you’re special then they’ll go out of their way to make things work out. Eric Clapton, rock star and longtime Ferrari aficionado, is one those special people. So when he approached Ferrari about making him an updated version of his favorite car, they obliged. For a price, of course.

The car is a recreation of the Berlinetta Boxster dubbed “the SP12EPC”. We’ve seen it before, but now we have a few more pictures.

Stylistically, the SP12EP is pretty close to the original. It has the funky hood slits, the two tone paint, and those black plastic engine covers that are oh-so-iconic. That’s where the similarities end. Underneath the new-and-improved sheet metal are the bones of a 458 Italia. They’ve also upgraded the engine to the 458’s V8. Whether or not that’s better than the V12 in the original car is a subjective assessment. Performance wise? It’s leagues ahead. But when was the last time you’ve heard a flat twelve. Allow me to refresh your memory:

Check out Clapton’s wheels below and check out the interview in Ferrari magazine here.
