A high-tech car international car smuggling ring responsible for the theft of at least $1.5 million worth of exotic cars has been busted up thanks to the efforts of the LAPD, U.S. Customs agents and one very savvy businessman, CBS News reports.
Asking himself who would pay $2k to rent a Ferrari only to let it sit without even firing up the engine, Blumberg tracked the car to a warehouse conveniently located near one of the nation’s biggest ports.
Police opened an investigation, but the Ferrari was already in Hong Kong, where exotic cars can fetch double their MSRP price on the black market. Customs agents used tracking data from the 458 Italia’s shipping container to recover 20 luxury and exotic cars, worth an estimated $1.5 million.
Blumberg got his Ferrari back, as did the rightful owners of the other vehicles. Sadly, this is just a drop in the bucket of the countless cars stolen and exported from the United States every year.
