Did you know that there are forty Porsche 918 Spyders registered in Montana?

For years, wealthy automotive and RV enthusiasts have been registering their fancy and expensive playthings in Montana to avoid paying higher taxes in whatever state they happen to reside in.

[Ed. Note: Cough, California, cough.]

It’s a big enough difference in your registration taxes that hundreds of one-percenters have been using this loophole for years. According to a report from the Bozeman Daily Chronicle, that loophole might be shrinking. The Montana Senate added a so-called “Ferrari Tax” to HB 650, which was approved by a vote of 72 yeas to 28 nays, adding a 1%-of-suggested-price annual fee, on top of the regular annual licensing fees.

It is likely that this 1% tax will not deter many of these folks from continuing the practice, as their home states will usually still cost significantly more per year in taxes. The loophole remains open, but in this way, Montana can at least profit from the practice. Montana doesn’t know exactly how many of the cars on this list have been registered by Montana residents, but they suspect the percentage is quite low. It seems unlikely that nearly fifty Ferrari 458 Speciale owners live there, right?
