Feast Your Eyes on the Production Porsche 918 Spyder
Yes, it’s a Porsche 918 Spyder, but this is the production model we’ve been waiting to see.
This image tweeted by Porsche shows how the production car looks pretty much the same as the pre-production version, so you’re forgiven for mistaking this as a prototype.
The Porsche tweet didn’t offer any new data on the car, but we do know this plug-in hybrid hypercar will have a 599-hp, 391 lb-ft 4.6L V8 mounted amidships, supported by a 127-hp front motor and a 154-hp rear motor. When all motors are singing in their three-part harmony, you get a whopping 886 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque.
Convert those harmonious forces into motion, and here’s what happens: 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. Wait another 20 seconds and you’ll be doing 186 mph on your way to the 918 Spyder’s 211-mph top speed. If you prefer traveling with less of a carbon footprint, you can go as fast as 93 mph in electric mode. Hypermiling the 918 will get you as far as 18 miles on electrons alone.
As we reported in our most recent Porsche 918 post, the car’s hybrid mpg rating should come in around 71 mpg, and the price is expected to be $845,000.
WorldCarFans says the 918 Spyder will be shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this Sunday.
