Ferrari 488 GT Modificata Is The Prancing Horse’s Latest Track-only Weapon
New track-only Ferrari 488 GT Modificata combines the best attributes of the 488 GTE and 488 GT3.
Ferrari is typically celebrated for its road-going cars, but lest we forget, the Prancing Horse makes some pretty special track cars, too. Its latest non-street-legal offering – the Ferrari 488 GT Modificata – most certainly fits the bill. The dedicated racer essentially slots in between the 488 GTE and 488 GT3, combining the best of both of those cars into what Ferrari calls “the perfect synthesis” between the two.
The limited-production Ferrari 488 GT Modificata is quite usage-limited, essentially restricted to either track days or Ferrari Club Competizioni GT events. But since it isn’t hampered by the FIA Balance of Performance regulations, it’s also quite enticing. The biggest benefactor is the engine, which Ferrari has coaxed 700 horsepower from – more than the GTE and GT3 – which is backed up by a gearbox with a carbon fiber clutch.
Ferrari also tweaked the aerodynamics of the 488 GT Modificata, shifting the pressure center forward to increase downforce. This way, the car produces more downforce up front without increasing overall drag, which makes it less sensitive to changes in the rear wing angle. At 142 miles-per-hour, the Modificata produces 2,204 pounds of downforce.
The vast majority of the Modificata’s body is made from carbon fiber, save for the aluminum roof and uprights. Much of the suspension components come straight from the GTE, including a braking system developed in conjunction with Brembo especially for the car. That setup borrows the GT3 EVO’s ABS system, but it’s tuned specifically for the Modificata.
The Ferrari 488 GT Modificata comes standard with a V-Box that works in conjunction with Bosch’s telemetry data acquisition system. Data can be downloaded onto a USB drive for easy analysis after the track day is over. Other standard equipment includes a high-res rear-view camera, a second seat, and a tire pressure monitoring system that measures pressure and temperature.
As one might expect from a bespoke racer, the Modificata is completely customizable to the owner’s tastes. However, it won’t just be available to anyone. The few examples that will be available will initially be sold only to drivers who recently participated in either the Ferrari Competizioni GT or Club Competizioni GT series.
