Full Aero of AMG ONE Is Exactly As Impressive As You’d Think
AMG ONE’s race mode creates visual sensory overload of invisible forces.
Formula 1 champ Lewis Hamilton has a pretty sweet gig. Not only does he get to pilot what is arguably the fastest F1 car on the grid, but he’s also gets to drive what will arguably be the fastest car on the street, too. As fast as they are, F1 cars are actually quite restricted. While F1 cars work with a rulebook regarding certain aerodynamic specifications, the AMG ONE road car suffers no such penalties. Active aero is not only fair game, but thoroughly utilized.
According to The Drive, this skit from AMG intends to show Hamilton in a sort of post-race mode. Scripted, sure, but it gets the point across that the AMG ONE is directly influenced by AMG’s Formula 1 efforts, and Hamilton’s feedback throughout the car’s development.
It seems AMG wants to highlight the EV-ness of the AMG one, as it lacks the usual fanfare of an engine roaring to life. While on pit lane, the car does an aero dance, with rear main wing, a secondary wing and front fender vents open up. The moment of action is a “track clear” command. And the universally accepted “race mode on” action of putting a helmet visor down. At that point, the car bursts into life and roars down pit lane. We’ll be persnickety here and hope Hamilton didn’t breach Silverstone‘s 80kmh pit lane speed limit, which the AMG ONE could accomplish in close to two seconds.
One thing we do hope for is that AMG aficionados will actually put the car through its paces. It’s a tough ask, with this current run of hypercars immediately appreciating in value. And as we know from our friends at MBWorld, limited run AMGs almost always fall into that category. Sure, you’ll have the usual suspects who will have the car as a fashion accessory. We’re just hoping for that one outside-of-the-box thinker who will attend a track day or two.
Interestingly, AMG also drops us a bit of a teaser at the end of the video, too. “Get ready for E Performance.” As far as we can surmise, this is the product nomenclature AMG would likely use for future electrified AMG cars. And seeing as their flagship car is the first to receive that designation, it means that cool factor is aptly applied to every model down the line.
