Love it or hate it, it’s looking more and more certain that Nissan’s next GT-R will be helped along by some form of hybrid motor. Speaking with TopGear, Nissan’s head of global sports cars James Oliver, stated that a hybrid GT-R, “is the obvious direction.”

A few months ago we began hearing reports that while Nissan was already hard at work on the next GT-R the company’s plans likely included some form of electrification. While Nissan hadn’t confirmed these reports, statements from Oliver definitely lend credibility to those rumors earlier this year.

With the Nissan Leaf performing quite well and furthering the company’s research into EV technology, the company wants to now combine that technology with the next GT-R in order to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s physically possible for a car.

Oliver went on to state, “When the R35 was launched in 2009 it was a massive leap forward, and we need to make sure when the next generation comes, it’s a similar leap forward.”

When the Nissan GT-R debuted, it proceeded to take down both Ferraris and Lamborghinis, all while at half of the cost and the status. With the recent hybrid hypercars all making their own marks on what is technologically possible, will the next GT-R  continue that tradition to take down things well above its humble beginnings?
