Green Power: Switzer’s Flex-Fuel F900
“Green” has become something of a dirty word in automotive circles. It dregs up mental images of painfully unexciting Prii and heavyweight hybrid Lexus‘ masquerading as “efficient.” When you’re in the market for car that delivers thrills, “green” is probably the last thing on the list you’re looking for. But it doesn’t have to be. Porsche themselves have gotten into the game with their forthcoming 918, and Koenigsegg has already set the bar with their 1018hp biofuel CCXR. Now Switzer’s gotten into it themselves with this flex-fuel 997.
As a flex-fuel vehicle, the F900 can be run on regular gasoline and E85 Ethanol. On regular gas the car makes 800hp. When the ethanol starts flowing, however, it turns into a different animal. Lower burning temperatures and a higher octane equivalence allows the car to make 900hp. That means, on a whim, this car can turn in 9 second time slips on pump gas while remaining totally streetable.
