Gunther Werks Takes A Fresh Approach To The 993, And It Is Stunning
While the 993 nears perfection for air-cooled Porsches, it turns out there’s a few improvements to be made.
Re-invention of older 911 models seems to be more and more common, but few get it right like Gunther Werks and their 400R. Debuting this at Pirelli PZero World in Los Angeles, California, the 400R takes an up-to-date approach to the last of the air-cooled 911’s, with flared cylinder bores, flared wheel arches and more capability than ever.
If you hand over your 993 to Gunther Werks, they’ll install a 4.0 liter naturally aspirated (and still air-cooled) engine. Output is ramped up to 400 horsepower and 330 lb/ft of torque, which may not seem like much, but the car is lighter than ever. Details of lightness include carbon fiber fenders, carbon fiber roof and carbon fiber bumpers.
Handling is improved with coilover suspension, and refreshingly tame 18 inch staggered wheels and tires. That tameness comes from a desire to reproduce what a 993 GT3 RS would be like, had Porsche actually made one. As opposed to other operations that re-invent older Porsches, this one aims to look like a factory model, with subtle changes, especially to the interior. Carbon fiber is used tastefully, including a GT3-esque removal of the rear seats.
We have to say, this is one of the best, and most thought out 993 that we’ve ever seen. And 6SpeedOnline editor, Manuel Carrillo III, who took these photos said, “Gunther Werks calls their new 400R ‘An icon remastered.’ One look at this vehicle in person, and you’ll discover how remastery becomes mastery. This coach-built car evokes emotions I never knew I could derive from staring at a 993, and I’m madly in love with the 993.”
