Have You Done The Simple 996/997 Gundo Exhaust Mod Yet?
Commonly known as the Gundo Hack, this simple exhaust mod allows a small muffler bypass for a stronger exhaust note.
Have a Porsche 996 or a 997-generation 911 and haven’t yet discovered the joy that is the Gundo Hack? Well if you haven’t found it through a quick search of our forums, the guys over at Car Throttle have put together a before/after video to showcase exactly what’s what.
Due to the unique shape of the muffler on the 911, the inlet and outlet side both run fairly close to each other. Using specific diameter tubing, a bypass of sorts can be made, allowing free-flowing air to go right out the tailpipe, rather than through the baffles in the muffler. Think of it as an “always on” version of Porsche’s Active Exhaust system.
Removal of the muffler is needed for the job, but is otherwise very simple. Cutting and alignment will probably be the most difficult part, and you should cut and measure from the new metal first. That way you’ll only have to cut the awkwardly angled OEM exhaust once. Or just take it to an exhaust shop or buddy who’s an expert welder.
Once it’s all done, bolt it all back together and enjoy some new German vocals! Demonstrating the before and after differences is the video below. Growls from the stock exhaust are relatively quiet and tamed, however with the Gundo Hack, there’s more of a raspy tone. A beautiful, flat-six raspy tone.
