Infiniti invited us to the unveiling of the all-new 2019 QX50 SUV.

The SUV segment is exploding in North America (again). Naturally, manufacturers are rushing to cash in, with compact, and mid-sized SUV models. Infiniti is also throwing their card into the hat with the QX50. Replacing the current QX50, this all-new model is handsome, and armed with cool tech.

Infiniti had decorated a large air hangar in preparation of the QX50 launch. The artwork that adorned the walls was very cool, if not a bit trippy. Moments later, the presentation began.

In short, sales are up, especially in North America, and Infiniti is diversifying it’s model portfolio. First up, obviously, is the new QX50. So, let’s take a look at it. The brand brought several variants of this new SUV, so it could be experienced in different colors and trim levels.

Despite being a sports car and track day enthusiast, I would be lying if I said the Infiniti isn’t a handsome brute. It has a distinctly Japanese design flare, with taut sheet metal pulled aerodynamic haunches and creases. A sort of automotive origami, as it were.

I mentioned previously that this Infiniti is packing some interesting tech. Sure, it has a nice interior, fulled with screens and buttons. That’s not what I’m talking about. No, alongside the brand new SUV was Infiniti’s brand new engine, the VC Turbo four-cylinder. “VC” stands for variable compression. Yes, this regular production model will feature a hyper-efficient engine that can switch from 8:1 to 14:1 compression on the fly, and anywhere in-between. Read our breakdown on the VC Turbo engine here.

The QX50 is poised to be a volume seller for Infiniti, and, based on the reception the SUV received at the launch, it will likely resonate with its intended American audience.
