James May Reviews the Ferrari 488 GTB
So what’s it like to watch former Top Gear presenter James May review a car without the production value and effects of Top Gear? Well, it’s different. Here’s the video May made for The Sunday Times about the Ferrari 488 GTB.
People have been complaining that the video doesn’t have the same production value as an episode of Top Gear. Well, it should be obvious that that would be the case. Why is the color saturation of the video all screwed up, though?
As for May himself? He’s his usual self, in my opinion. The way that he covers the car and its features here is exactly how I’d imagine him covering them for an episode of Top Gear. He even isn’t that excited to be driving the 488 on a racetrack, even though he knows exactly what he’s doing. Again, that’s typical James May stuff.
His verdict? Well, that’s more difficult to suss out. He thinks the 488 sounds okay, but he doesn’t compare it to the Ferrari that he currently owns. May has had a series of mid-engined, V8 Ferraris in the past.
He also mentions that it’s really difficult to find anything wrong with the 488 while driving it on twisty roads in Italy on a nice sunny day with a great meal ahead. Does that mean the Ferrari’s perfect? Absolutely not, but maybe May needs more time with the car, perhaps in England, to arrive at a final verdict.
What do you think?
