Lamborghini Reigns Supreme in a Rainy Supercar Drag Race Shootout

By -

Lamborghini Aventador SV beats all comers from Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren and many more on the wet tarmac.

The video above comes to us from the LoveCars YouTube channel and it features an absolutely epic day of drag racing, with cars from Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, BMW, Caterham and many more. In total, there appears to be at least 30 high-end performance machines on hand for the drag racing shootout at Dunsfold Aerodrome, but there is a problem.

On the day that hosts Paul Woodman and Tiff Needell invited the owners of these incredible performance machines to the air strip, it rained all day. We aren’t talking an occasional light rain; we are talking pouring rain that got heavier as the day went on, but the team and the drivers pushed on. As a result, we have a video chock full of supercars racing in the rain.

Early Racing

When the racing begins about two minutes into the video, an original Acura NSX takes on a Lamborghini Huracan and as you might expect, the all-wheel drive Lambo wins on the wet track. The second ran has an all-wheel drive Lamborghini Aventador talking on a Ferrari and once again, the all-wheel drive Lambo wins.

NSX Vs Lamborghini

Next, we watch four races at one, with a Noble taking on a Jaguar F-Type, an AMG wagon taking on a Lamborghini, another Lambo taking on a Porsche 911 and a Caterham taking on a Vauhxhall VXR8. The two Lamborghinis get the win, as do the Noble and the Caterham as all-wheel drive and lightweight cars continue to win in the rain.

Lamborghini beats Benz and 911

We also see a Rolls Royce Wraith beat an F-Type followed by an off-road buggy beating a McLaren 720s and a quick glimpse as a handful of other races. During this portion of the racing, the crew established the quickest eight cars from the field of 30, leading to a semi-final round.

Supercar Shootout in the Rain

In the quarterfinals, a Lamborghini Huracan Performante beat a Nissan GTR Nismo badly, the Caterham stomps a Ford Focus RS, the Wraith beats a BMW M4 and an Aventador SV beats a Huracan Spyder.

In the semifinals, the Aventador beats the Caterham, even though the open-wheeled, rear-drive race car put up an excellent fight. Also, the Huracan Performante ended the Wraith’s day of wrath, setting up an all-Lambo finals.

Wraith Versus Lamborghini

In the final round, the Aventador SV took on the Huracan Performante, with the big brother taking the narrow win on the top end.

Match Racing and More Rain

After the shootout was over and the Lamborghini Aventador SV had been named the champion, there were some match races to get out of the way. First up, a Ferrari 812 Superfast beat up a McLaren 720S, followed by a Porsche GT3 beating a 911 Turbo and an off-road buggy beating an Aston Martin DB11.

Ferrari Versus McLaren

Next, a new NSX takes on a Porsche and while the hybrid Acura holds the early lead, the 911 ends up taking the win.

Finally, a Vauxhall VRX8 took on a Porsche as the rain really got heavy. Around half-track, the Vauxhall driver lifted while the 911 driver kept the hammer down to get the big win. However, as the Porsche crossed the finish line, the back end came out and the car spun out of control down the empty airstrip. At that point, the racing was called off and everyone fled the rain, but the day still made for an interesting collection of races.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
