Lotus Evora Owner Takes Car To Winter Autocross—and Wins!

We applaud this Lotus Evora owner for enjoying their car year round. Instead of parking it, they raced to a gold!

Those of us at 6SpeedOnline like to keep our cars in good condition. We wash them with touchless car washes and give them ceramic coatings to protect their paint. We even think about driving them in only dry conditions, and storing them through the winter. But a small fraction enjoys driving so much, that they are willing to drive in any condition. Purely to enjoy their car. Those are our favorite kinds of drivers. And at Road America, we found one in the form of a Lotus Evora.

Above all other engines roaring away from the start line, this Lotus Evora was easily distinctive. Winter autocross naturally brings out a selection of Subarus and other 4-cylinder AWD cars, so the deep guttural bellow of a V6 was a refreshing one to hear. And, there’s something especially exotic about seeing a mid engined sports car dancing around in the powdery stuff.

In the hands of SuHong Kim, it danced remarkably well. Rules for the event allow cars to use snow tires – but not studs – so it wasn’t as though the Evora was tasked with driving on summer tires. It was also classed with other rear-drive cars in order to give those AWD cars their own class to play in, along with front-drive, too.

Road America gave two areas to play, with one being a section of the full track, and another on the go-cart track. Other than being on snow, the format was like a traditional autocross. And in both configurations, the Evora came away with a win. First place for rear wheel drive, twice! In fact, the performance of car and driver was so good, that Kim finished 8th overall in the more technically challenging and longer length course configuration.

While you might sit content with having your car tucked away in a garage with a battery tender gently humming away, Kim shows that you can still enjoy your car all year round, and take home some gold hardware while you’re at it.
