Mazda is Building a Monster
Usually we don’t cover smaller sports car manufacturers, we like to stay upscale, well Mazda might have just thrown a wrench into that.
We all know and love the RX-7, we’re ok with the RX-8, but both of those have long since been discontinued with no speak of the rotary goodness we all fell in love with for a long while. Sure we still get rumors of a revival, but they never amount to anything.
This rumor though might have some weight behind it. Since Mazda is turning 100 in 2020, which is complete news to me, the company really wants to showcase their design and engineering skills like never before.
According to Motoring, Mazda wants to build something dubbed the RX-9. They state that they don’t just want to introduce a new RX-7 or 8 in two years, but also introduce a range topping halo car that would go up against the Nissan GTR, and the always coming Acura NSX.
The two platforms would still use rotary power, but the horsepower of both would be upped greatly. Not much else is known, and the Mazda reps are pretty quiet about the whole deal, lending some credibility to the rumors.
Personally I’d love for Mazda to reintroduce the Furai concept and just build that, but I’ll take whatever they give me. After hearing the 787B on track for the first time in person, I think the world needs some more rotary goodness.
