Mercedes Preparing Porsche Rival For 2016

Mercedes has had an on-again, off-again relationship with their plans for a sports car to punish their neighbors at Porsche. They were testing a small car based off the SLS last year, but those plans were reportedly put on hold. Now, we’re hearing that plans for the SLC are back on the drawing board. According to Benz-Insider, the SLC should see production sometime in 2016.

The important thing to know is that it’ll come with a fat, AMG derived, twin-turbo V8, with 485 horsepower. Likely, it’ll be build of a shortened platform of the SLS, so the handling characteristics will likely remain the same. Unfortunately, that shortened frame means the car will lose the SLS’ trademark gullwing doors. I guess there’s only room for one winged beast in the Mercedes stable. Still, you’ll get those long, wide, and low proportions that make the SLS so attractive.

As it stands, Mercedes doesn’t have a dedicated small sports car. The SLK, while small and fast, is more of a competitor with the Z4s and Porsche Boxsters of the world. The SLC should fit in the niche between that car and the SL. Whether or not Mercedes will achieve their goal of besting 911 though… That has yet to be seen. 2016 should be an interesting year indeed.
