To call the Porsche 918 cutting edge is a little like saying the universe is a big place. Obviously it’s true, but there’s some nuance that’s missing, LIke the history. The 918 is new, but the Porsche’s legacy of building high-tech set-pieces isn’t. All you need to do is time-travel back to 1986 to see Porsche’s first technological tour-de-force in action. This 959 was the fastest car in the world when it came out. It was also the test-bed for a number of Porsche firsts.
The 918 is similar in a lot of ways. It’s Porsche’s first modern hybrid, for one thing. Similar to the way the 959 was the harbinger of AWD, the 918 is the preview for Porsche’s electrified future.
Specifically, how does the 918 live up to the 959’s legacy when it’s in motion? Clearly, the 918 is an evolution, but the gap in technological progress needs to be seen to be understood fully. Watch Carlos Lago and Randy Pobst put that gap on display below.
