New Aston Martin DB9 Testing in Germany
If you’re looking for a car that ages incredibly well, look no further than the Aston Martin DB9. It’s hard to believe that the current car has been with us, in one variation or another, for 12 years.
Competition in the grand touring segment is getting hot, with refreshed vehicles from Bentley and Rolls Royce. Aston Martin is aware of this forward march of time and are preparing a new DB9 that should appear in 2017.
What’s different about this relatively undisguised test mule? In this case, the changes are most likely under the hood. Aston Martin has an agreement with AMG to use specific versions of their engines in the new cars. Whether this one has the twin-turbo V8 or AMG’s big V12 is unclear, but it’s almost certain Aston’s old V12 is long gone.
A new version of Aston’s VH architecture will underpin the new car, which will be stronger and lighter than before. But in our opinion it’s unlikely that the exterior you see on this mule is finalized. While we expect the new Aston Martin DB9 to look like a modern Aston, the car you see here is probably using mostly current exterior body work as they refine the underpinnings.
It beats sending out prototypes wrapped in psychedelic vinyl wraps.
