Spending its whole life in California, ’79 Porsche 928 kept in top condition, features reupholstered interior, rebuilt V8.

Finding the right Seventies or Eighties car for your garage can be difficult. Do you choose something flashy, like a Ferrari Testarossa? Or do you prefer a more sedate ride, like a Mercedes 190E Cosworth 2.5-16 Evolution I? Perhaps a Porsche might do, like any of the front-engine models.

Our friends at Rennlist happened upon such a Porsche the other day via Harwood Motors of Macedonia, Ohio. There, a well-kept 928 from California waits for a new home.

“If you’ve always wanted a performance car but felt that supercars looked a little too extroverted, this 928 is for you,” Harwood says. Thus, this Porsche disappears into the crowd, though those in the know will easily spot the Opal Metallic beauty on the street.

Under the long hood is the original 4.5-liter V8, linked to a five-speed manual. However, along the way to its current residence, the 4.5 became a 4.7. Thus, it might make more than the 219 horses it had back in the Seventies.

Inside is the real surprise in this Porsche, though! Per Harwood, the whole thing was reupholstered, from the black carpeting to the butterscotch-and-black seats. Even the rear “seats” were re-done, as well as the cargo area and mini rear center console.

The two rear speakers in the trunk are connected to an amp under the new black trunk mat. Both are linked to a modern unit with a place for your iPod (if you have one, anyway; at least your iPhone has a home, though). Harwood says the headliner is original, the gauges are easy to read, and there’s no rust to worry about at all.

For the price of a new Honda Civic, you can roll correct in a ride with tons of late Seventies style, pop-up-up-and-down headlights and all. The only thing we’d do is swap out the black wheels for a period- and model-correct set in chrome or painted aluminum.

Whoever buys this will have a Porsche without the sort of attention (good and bad) any given 911 would draw upon itself. They’ll also be the envy of the neighborhood.
