The P1 GTR is Here to Make Your Fantasies Come True
McLaren Automotive debuted the ridiculous P1 GTR. A track only car that most of us have been waiting for them to make since they started making track only and racecars of the 12C and the 650S. We knew it was coming, we just didn’t really know what shape it would take.
Want the specs? Of course you do. It still uses the same 3.8L twin turbo V8 and hybrid system as in the road car, but the total horsepower is up to 986!
Everything on the car has now be setup to be the most aerodynamically efficient it could be, which means that many of the road cars functionality have been stripped away or moved to better push the car to the road.
Such as the wing mirrors. Something you generally don’t think of when you think of aerodynamics, but in this case, the P1 GTR’s mirrors were moved further up the A-Pillars to further reduce drag on the car.
The hyper track car has also been lightened considerable and comes with a bespoke driver training program that will help those lucky few extract everything possible out of the car.
What’s interesting to me in the press release is that McLaren compares this P1 to the F1 GTR they launched in 1995. The fact that they compare the two isn’t the interesting part, the interesting part is that after they launched it, they took that car racing.
I’m not sure what the regulations are at LeMans to ride in the Prototype class, or even the Garage 56 class that the DeltaWing drives in, but maybe that comparison means McLaren has the intention of taking this car racing! I really hope they do.
With Ferrari eyeing a LeMans return, and Porsche coming back in a big way, it’s about time we see another McLaren supercar running around a track.
