Pirelli Announces New Noise-Canceling Tires
Pirelli is rolling out its new Pirelli Noise Canceling System (PNCS) tires as a factory-installed option for the Audi RS 6 and RS 7. These tires use a sponge-like layer of polyurethane that lines the inner walls. PNCS is claimed to reduce in-cabin tire noise by 50 percent, or three decibels.
While PNCS significantly reduces tire roar, the addition of polyurethane to the inner tire compound is said to neither improve nor degrade a vehicle’s handling. You can identify a noise-cancelling tire by the “PNCS” etching on the sidewall.
Available tire sizes will be 285/30 ZR 21 and 275/30 ZR 21. Pirelli has yet to give details on retail availability in Europe or other markets like the United States. European noise-pollution rules have been the impetus for PNCS development, so it is likely this quiet technology will be limited to European consumers.
