Porsche 911 Turbo 930: Old-School Cool Still New-School Fast
Doug DeMuro agrees: the 930-generation Porsche 911 Turbo is ‘awesome and fast.’
The original Porsche 911 Turbo, or the “930,” was a significant improvement over the 911s of the day. Doug DeMuro, car enthusiast and mind behind “Cars and Bids,” points out that the 930’s starting power output of around 260 was much stouter than the previous model’s roughly 160 horsepower. That said, it grew with time and evolved into a driver-killing performance Porsche.
DeMuro points out that people of the era called the 930-generation Turbo “the Widowmaker.” He’s, of course, referring to the light weight, increasing power, and squirrely rear-wheel drive (RWD).
However, DeMuro also points out some of the 930’s quirks. Less than an outright detriment, the original 911 Turbo brandished its iconic rear spoiler, a feature that enthusiasts monikered “whale tail.” Further, the 930’s rear deck wore a badge that read “turbo,” sans 911 script. Perhaps the coolest, racing-inspired quirk of the 930 is its ignition key placement. The key resides to the left of the steering wheel, a classic feature that allows for an easier Le Mans start.
Eighties 930 Turbo: Bona fide Collector’s Car
The original 930 was a product with homologation in mind. DeMuro points out that it was “an experiment.” Understandably so, given that Porsche only produced less than 30,000 930s worldwide throughout its run from 1975 to 1989.
What’s more, the 1989 model is the only manual 930 to pack a G50 five-speed manual transmission. However, in 1991, Porsche released the 964-generation 911, an entirely different car.
Turbo 911 Is Spectacular, But it’s ‘Pay to Play’
The 930 Porsche 911 Turbo has an average sales value of around $160,000. However, the only five-speed 930 in the bunch demands a bit more. Specifically, enthusiasts will have to let go of closer to $186,000 to grab a 1989 model based on recent sales, per Classic.com.
