Porsche Axes 458 Rival
Porsche has always had an adversarial relationship with Ferrari. Between its racing pedigrees and both company’s road cars, the two have been at war for decades. A few months ago, that relationship was rumored to be possibly heating up once again with Porsche developing a 458 rival.
The car was rumored to be under consideration at Porsche, and was thought to use the same flat V8 the hybrid Hypercar 918 uses. However, this car’s engine would use a detuned, and sans the hybrid system version of that same V8. Now though, it seems that those in charge at Porsche have killed the project citing that the time just wasn’t right.
While the 458 rival would have been quite a sight to see, the 991 911 is already a serious performer and rivals that of the Ferrari. Building on that existing platform with models like the GT3 and GT3 RS can only showcase Porsche’s engineering skills further. Rather than building a whole new model, Porsche could re-engineer the 991 to truly exceed the Ferrari’s abilities.
But the question then becomes, should Porsche have gone through with the 458 rival, or is the market already too saturated with supercars?
