Porsche Bought by Volkswagen for $5.6 Billion
They’ve been doing this dance for the better part of a decade, but now it’s official. Beginning August 1st, Porsche will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG. They’ll purchase the remaining 50.1 percent stake for $5.6 billion.

What this means for the consumer is unclear. Volkswagen already owns several different brands, most of whom act with a great deal of independence. I don’t imagine theirĀ treatmentĀ of Porsche will be any different. They already undergo a bit of platform sharing with Volkswagen in the Cayenne. It’s underpinnings are the same as both the Toureg and Audi’s Q7. Maybe we’ll see more of that type of thing from Porsche in the future as they expand their brand beyond pure sports cars.

We probably won’t be seeing any VW badged boxer engines, but I hope so. How does a flat-four, rear engined, new Beetle sound? That was an impossible thing to hope for until a few moments ago. Now, there’s a chance. Let’s see where this new “Auto Union” goes.

What do you think will come out of Porschewagen? Tell us your thoughts in forums!
