Rumormill: Porsche Confirms Ferrari 458 Fighter?

Apparently there is  room at the top. Porsche has a gap in it’s line-up between the 911 GT2 and the 918 Spyder. Admittedly, it’s a very small gap, but it’s one that competitors Ferrari currently own with the 458 Italia. It looks like Porsche is aiming to change that.

Matthis Muller, Porsche’s CEO, has confirmed that they’re developing a new car to fit that gap according to AutoExpress. They say it’ll be a mid -engine sports car with a 4.6L V8. If that engine configuration sounds familiar, it should: The same on is used in the Porsche 918 Spyder. In fact, they say it will borrow a lot of the chassis technology from the Spyder as well, including that sexy carbon fiber monocoque chassis. More than likely, it’ll end up looking more like the 918 than the 911 as well.

If this is true, then there’s a good chance that we’ll see the prototypes out on the Nurburgring sometime in near future. Actually, if Porsche was tricky about it, it could very well be that they’ve been testing the car in the guise of the 918 already.

If this is true, it’s definitely an interesting time to be a Porsche fan. Porsche has branched out before in the past, but this is a new car on top of the Panamera, the (wildly successful) Cayenne, and the upcoming Macan. Personally, I don’t mind another sports car from Stuttgart, but purists might disagree. What do you think?

Should Porsche add another sports car?
