Porsche Mission E Receives Name Change, Now Called Porsche Taycan
We knew all along that Mission E was simply a placeholder model name. But now Porsche has made it official.
We’ve known since day one that the forthcoming Porsche Mission E was destined for a name change. But as the car has been around for seemingly years now, we’d almost forgotten that little tidbit. The wait finally ended at Porsche’s “70 years of sports cars” ceremony when CEO Oliver Blume revealed the Mission E’s new, somewhat interesting and very much official name – the Porsche Taycan.
What the heck is a Taycan, you ask? Well, according to Blume, it can be loosely translated as “lively young horse,” which references the leaping steed in the Porsche crest. “Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom,” Blume explained.
As you might imagine, the Internet immediately had a little fun with the new Porsche Taycan nomenclature. You could say that perhaps all the good car names were “Taycan,” or maybe whip up a few Liam Neeson references. But you have to admit, it’s better than just giving the car a number. Although Mission E seemed perfectly fine to us in the first place.
Regardless of how you feel about the Porsche Taycan, there’s no denying its significance to the future of the automaker. Porsche likes to semi-deny that the EV is taking aim squarely at Tesla. But we all know the real truth. With 600+ hp of combined output, a sub 3.5-second 0-60 time, and a super-quick charging system, it’s arguably the first real competition the Model S will face.
Blume also used the event to announce Porsche’s coming $6 billion Euro investment in electric cars by the year 2022. Which is double what the brand originally planned to spend. $500 million of that will go to developing additional EV models. So let this serve as a warning to Tesla – Porsche plans on “Taycan” away your market share!
