Porsche Museum Pays Homage to… Are You Ready?

The transaxle! Yes, Porsche has actually built an entire display at their Stuttgart Museum to celebrate the transaxle, which was introduced into the first Porsche model back in 1976.

That’s such a Porsche thing to do; to celebrate a mechanical component. I wonder if someone is keeping record of the lug nut, or the radiator hose clamp, when are their anniversaries?

In 1976, Porsche introduced the transaxle powertrain configuration in the type 924 and embarked into new territory. The engine was mounted in front, but the transmission was located at the rear axle. Between 1976 and 1995, Porsche built a generation of sports cars that deviated far from the established principles of the 911 – in the types 924, 928, 944 and 968.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of such accomplishment, the Porsche Museum is showing 23 exceptional examples of these cars in the framework of the special exhibition “The Transaxle Era. From the 924 to the 928.” Over half of these cars were unearthed from Porsche’s secret collection, and are being exhibited at the museum for the first time ever.

Fun Fact: The Porsche 928, which originally celebrated its premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1977, was initially intended to replace the 911. Clearly, that never happened, but it’s crazy to think that Porsche nearly killed the 911 nearly 40 years ago!

What will 2017 bring, the year of the air filter?
