The Panamericana’s styling was a visual throwback to the Carrera Panamericana, a grueling early-1950’s endurance road race through Mexico. Vehicles in that competition had to be “as fast on asphalt as on a loose surface.” Porsche’s 1989 concept would probably do well there – with the roof on, of course.
