Porsche Taycan Sets Guinness World Record for Fastest Speed Indoors
Racing driver Leh Keen puts the Taycan in the Guinness record books again. This time shattering a record that has stood for seven years.
The Porsche Taycan has impressed in just about every way imaginable since its release. That includes entries in the Guinness World Record book. A rear-wheel-drive Taycan has already made the cut by setting the longest drift record. Now it is time for the top dog Taycan Turbo S to have a go. Being the quickest Taycan model available you would assume this record attempt would have something to do with speed. According to a recent Porsche press release you would be correct. The Taycan Turbo S has set the world record for the fastest speed driven by a vehicle in an enclosed building.
Racing driver Leh Keen was behind the wheel of the Taycan on its record-breaking run. The venue was the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. The old record stood for seven years and was set at 138.4 kph. That is just under 86 mph for those that can’t be bothered with the metric system. Keen smashed the record when he hit 165.1 kph or a little over 102 mph in the Taycan. Over 100 mph inside a building. Wow. Per the rules the attempt had to start and finish at a standstill, all within the space of the building. There could be no run up to the inside, no doors open at all. There was no escape option. If things went south, then Keen was hitting the wall.
Driving a car indoors is not just challenging due to the confines. The driving surface does not exactly offer the greatest grip in the world. The surface in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center is polished concrete. The good news is there is over one million square feet of it. The bad news is it is like driving on ice. The surface is so unpredictable, so slick, that you have to have complete trust in your car. It truly was like ice – and you’re accelerating flat out, facing a really hard wall at the end. Suddenly, even in a massive space like the one we had, it seems very small.” Said Keen. If you are going to trust any car in those conditions the Taycan Turbo S is a smart choice.
The Taycan Turbo S is blessed with an intelligent all-wheel drive system that provides grip even in a low friction environment. Although as a precaution the tires were preheated before the record attempting run. It is also one of the quickest accelerating cars on the planet, and its massive brakes haul it down from speed just as quickly. Amazingly it only took one attempt to break the record. After a few low-speed exploratory runs, Keen just went for it all. He and the car crushed it.
It seems like we can barely go a month without the Taycan breaking another Guinness world record. It is hard to believe the car only debuted about a year and a half ago. Harder to believe is that the is the first all-electric Porsche. If they started like this, then what is the next generation going to be like? World records or not, it is clear the Taycan is an impressive machine. Indoors or out.
