Questionable Racing: Drama in GP2 Spain

Summer is here and the motorsport season is in full swing. There’s drama across several series and we’ll take a look at all we can, but for this post let’s take a look at the action in the GP2 series.

Depending upon who you are, it’s either very early or very late when the GP2 cars take to the track.  If you’re not familiar with the series, the cars look very similar to a F1 or IndyCar but have less power from their V8 engines and make less aerodynamic downforce as compared to their open wheel counterparts.  GP2 is considered a feeder series for Formula1. Drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Romain Grosjean all used the series as a finishing school as they honed their skills so when the time came to race in a faster, higher performing car, the drivers would have some level of preparation.

Though the races are on very early, they aren’t as tightly guarded on Youtube as let’s say a Formula1 race.  Soon after a race’s completion its full broadcast can be found on the video webpage.

Each weekend, the series will hold two races: the sprint race, and the feature race. The second of the two is the feature race, and that round in Spain was a processional snooze until the very end when all hell broke loose.  The diver who has, and is always the most likely to go rogue is Johnny Checotto. The Venezuelan races for the Arden Team.  His trouble this season began in Malaysia. There’s no denying Checotto used his car as a weapon.  Race stewards decided the best punishment was relegation to the back of the grid.

The last race In Spain, there was much of the same. I’ve embedded the race. Fun starts at about 42 minutes when Checotto loses bits of his car. At 45 minutes he pulls his first questionable move, and from there things just get worse. The 49 minute mark is the last lap of the race and Checotto makes a move that we’d like your opinion on.

How ’bout it 6speed? Was he just a racer under duress? Or was it a move that warrants him sitting out a race given his history? Give a vote in the poll below and look for more questionable racing posts coming your way.

What do you think?
