A Barnyard Find That’s Fit for a King – Elvis Presley’s 1957 BMW 507
Elvis Presley’s lipstick red 1957 BMW 507 is currently parked at the BMW Museum in Munich and is awaiting a much needed restoration.
From the looks of the recently released photos, the classic car looks “All Messed Up” rather than “All Shook Up.” It sure looks like it spent more years “In the Ghetto” instead of an Alabama warehouse where it was found.
The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s ragged roadster is currently missing its engine and it will be lovingly restored by BMW. Presley paid $3,750 for it while he spent his tour of duty as a GI in Germany.
It was originally white and he later painted it rock star red after fans kept leaving their phone numbers on the car’s white fenders according to several reports.
It arrived in the US in 1960, was eventually sold in 1968 and spent the rest of its days withering away in a warehouse.
Only 254 507 Roadsters were made by BMW from 1955-1959. Elvis’ ride had a V8 engine with a whopping 150 horsepower.
“To be able to realize a project is the dream of every Fahrzeugrestaurateurs,” says Ulrich Knieps, Director of BMW Group Classic via Google Translate.
Not sure what a “Fahrzeugrestaurateurs” is but he continues, “Alone that the BMW 507 the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll finds its way into the BMW Museum, is quite remarkable. This classic cars then be able to restore even with us, is a very special task for us.”
The restoration should be an epic one and the 507 remains on display at the museum until August 10. After that BMW Group Classic will spend lots of time restoring it while listening to “Love Me Tender” on an endless loop.
