Spex MX-5 Challenge Race Offers No-hold Barred Racing Action

Spec MX-5 Challenge Series offers the type of “rubbing is racing” fun we need in our lives.

This is Spec MX-5 Challenge racing. If you couldn’t tell, some bumping and rubbing tends to happen, a lot, and we can’t look away.

Self-described as being “positioned between Spec Miata and Global MX-5 Cup,” this low(ish) cost racing series seems right up our alley. After all, who doesn’t love driving a Miata? According to their Frequently Asked Questions section, a full season of this, which is 10 arrive-and-drive races, costs $48,000. That gets you the car, support and coaching necessary to be competitive in the field.

Interestingly, perhaps to keep costs low, the series uses previous generation ‘NC’ Miatas, which look to be lifted directly from Global MX-5 Cup. The latter has since switched to the current ‘ND’ chassis. Much like Spec Miata and Global MX-5 Cup, the cars are built to spec, and are completely identical across the field. This means that, in theory, the strongest drivers shall emerge victorious.

Did we mention this seems like a ton of fun? The series is accepting applicants for the 2019 season. Now, we just need to scrounge up an extra $48,000 (and a bit) to go racing.
