Speedhunters: “Bow Down to Japanese Car Culture”

It’s an aggressive statement that prompted a fair bit of skepticism as I clicked the link on this Speedhunters blog post. After reading the article, I got it. And here’re a few key lines that did it for me:

“This is when JDM rides get outnumbered; where the Japanese passion for everything ‘import’ is exhibited in an impressive parade”

“The mix couldn’t possibly be broader. It’s not so much the sheer opulence that impresses the most.”

Car meets are an interesting phenomenon with their own set of cultural nuances as social gatherings. Generally, we meet with owners of the same make or models—people from different backgrounds, maybe different values, but a consistent underlying chain of similarity in none other than their enthusiasm for a certain type of car.

To outsiders, meets can be a starkly bizarre occurrence but for those who’ve attended (and made friends from them) – they’re a great opportunity to find like minded individuals with the potential for new perspectives.

Point being, get yourself to Speedhunters, read through Dino Dalle Carbonare’s article. It’s a great showcase of a truly diverse meetup, the likes of which you’d be hard-pressed to find anything similar outside of Japan.
