Lets see… Hacked up wheel arches? Check. Mismatched rims? Check. Random bits of plastic tacked on here and there? Check and check. There’s an upgrade coming to the Boxster. The question is, “what’s changing?”

According to Jalopnik and MotorTrend, Porsche will build a hardcore Cayman dubbed (tentatively) the Porsche Cayman GT4. That’s interesting for a few reasons, but the most tempting reason is that it’ll be the GT3 equivalent for the Boxster/Cayman combo. They’ll be lifting Porsche’s PDK system from the GT3 before dropping it into this new car.

I know the manual transmission lovers might look upon this move with derision, but I think they’re failing to recognize a few things. The first is that Porsche’s PDK is a phenomenal transmission by any metric. Then second, is that if Porsche is planning on using the transmission from the GT3, they’re certainly not going to leave the engine unfettered. Or, it could just be Porsche testing their new 4-cylinder drivetrain. The photographers mentioned the car didn’t sound like the normal flat-six in Cayman. Either way, there’s something new living in boot of the 981.

Right now there’s no video, but I’m sure some photographer will capture this mystery Boxster squealing it’s way around the Caracciola Karussell on Youtube in no time. Check out the gallery below for a sneak peek at the Boxster’s future.
