One unlucky Porsche 911 owner got a nasty ticket courtesy of NYC noise-detecting cameras

A 997-generation Porsche 911 managed to earn its driver an irritating ticket in New York City, per Road & Track. While a Porsche 911 isn’t exactly the typical resident you’d expect in NYC, some enthusiasts and fans still find themselves on the streets of The Big Apple aboard performance cars. Such was the case for one 997 911 owner who tripped a decibel-detecting camera system that NYC uses to sort out “modified vehicles.”

However, the 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera S, tragically, was stock. It’s not tragic because the owner left it unmodified. No, it’s tragic because the authorities issued a noise ticket to an unaltered car. The owner told Road & Track that they received an $800 noise violation citation from the city on 36th Street in Manhattan. Moreover, should that same driver receive another citation, it will be an eye-watering $2,500.

The Porsche 911 owner admits to accelerating between stoplights, although he says he wasn’t speeding excessively. Still, despite the factory nature of his 3.8L flat-six and exhaust system, his throttle blip triggered one of the cameras NYC installed as part of the “Stop Spreading the Noise Act.”

These noise-detecting systems could target unmodified performance cars

NYC Council Majority Leader Keith Powers says the $35,000 cameras are “going after those who are potentially using an illegal vehicle, a modified vehicle, some that are really acting loudly.” However, the 85-decibel cutoff could target all kinds of unaltered, bone-stock performance cars.

After all, the Hearing Center of Excellence, a part of the Defense Health Agency that monitors servicemembers’ hearing wellness, rates a hair dryer at 85 dB. You might imagine, then, that any performance car with a factory sports-oriented exhaust system would net drivers a hefty sum in violations.
