Tesla Idles Plant to Get Ready for Model X
Tesla Motors shut down its assembly line for the next two weeks. This isn’t due to some unsafe part like GM, or anything to do with the crash that split the car in two a few weeks back. No, Tesla is expanding and the company’s assembly line needs to be retooled to start the building of Tesla’s third car ever, the Model X.
For those that don’t know, the Model X will be Tesla’s answer to the ever growing CUV market, but in Tesla fashion, will be the most bonkers one around. Forget your Range Rover Evoques, or Brabus GLKs, this Model X has them beat just on the doors alone.
What many considered to be just a concept party piece, the hawk wing doors, actually made it to production! But the Model X will also have a leg up on its sister car the Model S due to the Model X’s new AWD platform. That means the X will be able to pretty much do anything it wants, and fast. The Model S has been shown to already be a giant killer 4 door family grocery getter, add AWD and this thing is going to fly.
The plant will come back online around August 4th, and Tesla affirms that even with the idling of the plant they will be able to produce and ship a further 35,000 Model S’ this year.
I’m not sure how much love for Tesla is around here, but as a recent convert, I sure as hell will do what I can to get people to find some seat time in it. It is a brilliant, disconcerting, awesome weird car from the future, and I love it.
