Tesla Unveils $30k Software Upgrade for the Original Roadster
Like most technology applications nowadays, the world runs on software updates and not so much on hardware redesigns. Such is the case of the new software recently unveiled by Tesla, which awards their original Roadster model a total battery range of 340 miles.
The software update is simply called the 3.o and Tesla demands all interested owners to put put a $5,000 deposit toward the $29,000 grand total for the update. While most, including myself would think that’s a huge chunk of change for a simple download, Tesla says it’s not just that. For the price of a perfectly fine Mazda MX-5 Miata, Tesla will install a new and more capable battery, the software install, and even new aerodynamic body bits to help it achieve the promised 340 mile range.
While Tesla admits this is a high-price for their product, they also state that given the number of Tesla Roadsters and how profitable the update can be (due to non-infested owners), the upgrade isn’t nearly as profitable as it would be for the Model S or X.
